Fall Yard Prep: How to Tackle Leaves and Keep Your Lawn Healthy

Ah, autumn. The crisp air, pumpkin-flavored treats, and, of course, the beautiful fall leaves. While those colorful leaves make for a gorgeous scene, they can quickly become a headache when they pile up in your yard. Clearing leaves isn’t just about keeping things looking neat. It’s about keeping your lawn healthy too.

Rake or Blow

Raking is the classic approach, but it can be hard work. Leaf blowers are a great alternative if you want to speed things up, especially on larger yards. The key is to get the leaves up regularly so they don’t smother your grass. Leaving thick layers of leaves on the lawn can block sunlight, trap moisture, and even lead to mold or fungus growth.

Mulch Them

Don’t toss those leaves out just yet! Mulching is a fantastic way to put them to work. A mower with a mulching setting or a leaf mulcher can chop leaves into small pieces that break down naturally, returning nutrients to your lawn and garden. Mulched leaves also act as natural insulation for your soil as the cooler months arrive.

Composting

If you’re a fan of gardening, consider composting your leaves. A compost pile mixed with leaves, grass clippings, and other organic waste creates nutrient-rich compost you can use in flower beds and vegetable gardens next spring. Bonus: it’s eco-friendly and keeps yard waste out of landfills.

Check for Pests

Fallen leaves can be cozy hiding spots for pests, from insects to small rodents. Regularly clearing and mulching leaves reduces these risks while keeping your yard neat and safe.

With a little effort each week, clearing leaves doesn’t have to feel like a chore. Your grass will stay green and healthy, your garden will benefit from nutrient-rich mulch, and your yard will look picture-perfect all season long.

Fall is a beautiful time for your lawn- just make sure those leaves don’t take over!
